OUR JUDGES
SHANE TIERNAN: Shane Tiernan (aka Foolish Shane) has been painting minis since the invention of the wheel or maybe 1978. He started selling minis on his Facebook store, Foolish Games, in 2016 and then opened a brick-and-mortar game store, The Strange Realms, in 2018, where he taught monthly mini painting workshops. He left that store in 2020, but continues to sell thousands of miniatures a year online. He has done multiple commissions over the years, and won a couple local painting competitions, but has way too many unpainted minis to be painting other people’s toys.
JOHN MCAVOY: Commission painter and owner of both Wicked Gaming Studios and Mini Master Werks. John currently has artists in the United States, Canada, and Europe and their team has painted thousands of miniatures for the wargaming, and board game communities. John has donated miniature armies to charities for Doctors Without Borders, Breast Cancer organizations, and multiple children's charities. After years of attending miniature conventions, and teaching painting classes John realized the need for an all-in-one mobile miniature painting studio. And after 2 years of design and mechanical engineering, Studio X was released on Kickstarter and brought to life by 2,000+ backers. John is currently finalizing pre orders for Studio X, working on new product development, miniature design, and painting for the studio.
KATIE PILZ: A member of Tantrum House, stay at home mom, and prolific artist, Katie has a Master’s degree in Studio Art specializing in painting. Color and compositional theory are areas she tries to focus on when doing any art piece or design project. She loves board games—especially when the game features great art and minis. Katie enjoys a variety of genres including: fine art, mini painting, interior design, sewing, illustration, and cosplay.
